Hey, guys! I’m S.M. Blooding, author of Devices of War. Watch the video to learn a little bit about the world building for this series. In this post, we’re going to talk a little bit about the amazing characters who live in this fantastic world and give you a little bit about how they survive.
The first one up is Synn El’Asim. He was born and raised up in the air. His ship is the Yussra Samma, and she’s gorgeous! Imagine a big, flying clipper ship. Just like any good ship, she’s got a personality. The Mark of the El’Asim Family is storm, so they’re able to harness lightning, which is a resource on this moon. They gather other supplies, too, but lightning is the one resource no one else can harness nearly as well.
Next, we have Ino Oki. They’re customs are borrowed loosely from the Japanese, so they say last name first. This has confused a lot of readers because when we get to Ino City, there are a lot of Ino’s. That’s their last name. She lives in the oceans on their lethara. She’s quite adept at handling just about everything that goes on in Ino City and she’s being set up to take her mother’s place as ruler—but only if she proves herself, which she’d doing a pretty admirable job. Her Mark is fire, surprisingly, and the only weakness she shows is that her Mark is small. Synn’s covers a large part of his body, but hers barely covers one shoulder. The larger the tattoo (which magically appears on their body and gives them control over their element) the greater their power.
Umira Haji Nuru is a land dweller and his Mark is actually spirit. He’s what the Great Families call a mixed Mark. However, he’s like an empath here. Originally, Haji was just going to be Synn’s best friend, but he really grew up into a much stronger character. When his Family is destroyed and he’s left with nothing—literally nothing—he discovers some pretty amazing things about himself and his willingness to survive while helping those, like him, who have no surviving tribe. With no tribe, you don’t survive winter. Other tribes and cities will allow you to live with them during the seasons of plenty, but in winter? You’re left on the ice
Just about everyone’s favorite character, though, is Nix. And she’s not a favorite because she’s amazing. She’s a favorite because she’s the villain everyone loves to hate. That makes me so happy when I create a villain that’s so dimensional that people actually send me messages and Tweets about. She was born from the Shankara Family whose Mark is air, but her Mark arrived as fire (Ino), so she was banished. The Hands of Tarot, a religious order, saved her and she eventually became the Queen of Wands. When she did so, she decided to get a little justice for having been banished, for losing her husband and children. You don’t want to cross her.
There are a lot of other amazing characters in this story! It’s a very world and character rich trilogy. Come on in and give it a try! If you like adventure stories on other planets and being immersed in other worlds, you’re going to love this series!
